What it's for
Instantly see the exact time in any major city in the world: handy for calling someone abroad, scheduling an online meeting or following a live event without getting the time zone wrong.
How it works
The time is computed by your device using official time zones, so it also accounts for daylight saving time. Everything runs in your browser, nothing is sent to a server.
The zones that are not whole hours
The map of time zones is not made of full hours only: India is at +5:30, Nepal at +5:45, Iran at +3:30, and parts of Australia at +9:30. They are political and geographical choices, not mistakes, and they wreck any mental arithmetic done in whole hours.
There are also zones very far apart over a few kilometres: the date line runs between the Diomede islands, four kilometres apart, with twenty-one hours between them. China, wide enough for five geographical zones, uses a single time for the whole country.
Why your device works out the time
Zone rules change more often than people think: countries adopting or dropping summer time, islands moving from one side of the date line to the other, regions shifting by half an hour. That is why the time is taken from the operating system's time-zone database, which updates itself.
The practical benefit is that the calculation already accounts for each country's summer time, which starts on different dates in the two hemispheres. A mental sum with «plus six hours» is wrong twice a year, for two or three weeks, exactly when international meetings line up badly.
The day that changes sooner than you expect
Calling someone on the other side of the world almost always means calling them on a different day: when it is Monday morning in Rome, it is already late Monday afternoon in Sydney and still Sunday evening in Los Angeles. The same phone call lands in three different working days.
The useful window with East Asia is early European morning, the one with the US west coast late afternoon. With New Zealand the overlap with European office hours is practically nil, and somebody pays for the meeting with an awkward hour: better to decide that than to discover it.
