Fancy fonts for your bio

What it's for

Instagram, TikTok and other socials don't let you change fonts: these special Unicode characters work everywhere and make bios, names and posts stand out.

How it works

They aren't real fonts but special Unicode characters: you can paste them into any app. Some may not show on very old devices.

They are not fonts, they are different characters

Platforms do not let you change typeface, so the trick is something else: normal letters are replaced with Unicode symbols that resemble them. The stylised bold «a» is not a bold «a»: it is a different character, created for mathematical notation, called «mathematical bold a», which the system happens to draw that way.

From that follow all the practical consequences, good and bad. The good one is that they can be pasted anywhere, because they are text to all intents and purposes. The bad ones are three, and none is obvious.

The three consequences almost nobody weighs

The screen readers do not read them as letters: a word in stylised italics is read character by character, or skipped entirely, or pronounced as «mathematical italic a» repeated for every letter. A fully stylised bio is, for a blind person, noise.

The search does not find them: someone looking for your name in normal characters will not find the profile that writes it stylised, and the same goes for the words of the bio. And display is not guaranteed: on older devices or in some apps empty boxes appear, and the bio ends up illegible precisely to whoever has the older phone.

How to use them without hurting yourself

The practical rule is using them for one word or two, never for the name, never for the whole bio, never for information that has to be read or searched. A decorative symbol between two sections, or one highlighted word, works; the name and the occupation go in normal characters.

It is also worth remembering that they take more space in the count: many of these characters are worth two units instead of one, so a stylised bio reaches the limit sooner than expected, and that is the typical surprise when the text gets truncated.

The alternatives that do the same job

If the aim is separating the sections of a bio, a line break or a simple symbol like a vertical bar does the same job and costs nothing. If the aim is catching the eye, an emoji at the start of the line works better than a stylised word, because it is coloured and is read correctly by screen readers.

And if the aim is standing out, the thing that really stands out is what is written: in a grid of profiles all full of strange characters, the only one read at first glance is the one written normally.
