What it's for
The bio is the first thing new visitors see: use these prompts as a base and add what makes you unique.
Tip
An effective bio says who you are and what you offer in a few words. Remember Instagram limits the bio to 150 characters.
The three lines a bio has to contain
Who you are, who you are for and what the visitor should do. Those are three pieces of information, not three catchy phrases: someone reading a bio is deciding in three seconds whether to follow or go back, and a poetic description that does not say what the profile contains loses that decision.
The commonest error is the bio made of adjectives about yourself — «dreamer», «lover of life», «coffee addict» — which describe everybody and therefore nobody. Replacing them with one concrete fact, however small, changes everything: not «passionate about cooking» but «thirty-minute recipes, no strange equipment».
The limits, and what happens when you exceed them
Lengths differ from platform to platform and hover between a hundred and fifty and a hundred and sixty characters for personal profiles, with more room on professional profiles and work platforms. Exceeding them gives no error: the text is simply truncated, and the cut part is nearly always the one with the call to action.
Watch out too for two things that take up more than they seem: line breaks, which count as characters and which on some apps have to be inserted with a trick because the return key publishes, and emoji, which are worth two characters or more. A bio full of symbols can overflow while looking short.
The link, which is the functional part
On almost every personal platform the link in the bio is the only clickable link on the profile, and therefore the only thing that turns a reader into something else. Putting a website's homepage there is the commonest waste: someone arriving from a specific post expects the page for that post.
Hence the habit of changing it often, pointing it at the latest thing published, and the note in the bio announcing it. Pages that collect several links work, but they add a step: every extra tap loses a share of the people, and with two or three destinations it is better to pick one.
The words that make you findable
On some platforms the name — not the username, the display name field — is searched, while the bio text often is not. Anyone wanting to be found for a topic writes it there: «Marta Rossi | portrait photography» is found by searching «photography», while «Marta Rossi 🌿✨» is not.
The other decision concerns hashtags in the bio: they are clickable but they lead away from the profile, and rarely bring people in. In a bio with a hundred and fifty characters, every hashtag costs space that could have persuaded somebody to stay.
