What it's for
The one-rep max (1RM) is the weight you could lift just once. It's used to set training loads as a percentage, without actually testing it (which is risky).

Why the real one-rep max is not tested
A maximal attempt is heavy not only on the muscles but on tendons, joints and the nervous system: it demands flawless technique exactly when fatigue is degrading it, and failing under a loaded barbell is the classic way to get hurt. That is why nearly every programme works from an estimate rather than a test.
The estimate comes from an observed regularity: there is a fairly stable relationship between the number of repetitions you can manage and the percentage of your maximum. At ten reps you are around seventy to seventy-five per cent, at five around eighty-five, at three around ninety. The most used formulas, Epley and Brzycki, put exactly that into numbers.
Why the estimate worsens with many repetitions
Above six to eight repetitions the formula stops measuring strength and starts measuring endurance, which is a different and far more individual quality. Two people with the same maximum can manage twelve reps and seven reps with the same weight, and no formula can know that.
Hence the practical rule: use sets of three to six repetitions, taken close to the limit but not to technical failure. A set of fifteen returns a number that can be wrong by several kilos, and that number will then be used to calculate every load in the programme.
The maximum changes with the exercise and with the day
The formulas work well on multi-joint barbell lifts — bench, squat, deadlift — and badly on single-joint exercises and machines, where resistance changes along the movement. On a dumbbell curl the number that comes out is indicative and little more.
And it changes day by day: sleep, food, stress and how much you trained on the previous days easily shift performance by five per cent. An estimated maximum is therefore a snapshot of that day, and should be refreshed every few weeks rather than carried on for months.
How it is used in a programme
It serves to choose loads as percentages: pure strength is trained above eighty-five per cent with few repetitions, hypertrophy between sixty-five and eighty with longer sets, muscular endurance below that. It is why the maximum exists as a number: without it, loads are chosen by feel and nearly always stay too light.
A more modern use is reps in reserve, that is stopping when one or two repetitions are left in the tank. It adapts by itself to a bad day and requires no recalculation, which is why many coaches prefer it to percentages for anyone who does not compete.
