How many hashtags should you actually use?

Instagram allows up to 30 hashtags per post, but maxing them out rarely pays off: Instagram itself recommends sticking to 3 to 5 well-targeted hashtags. On TikTok, 3-6 tags closely tied to the content tend to perform best, while on X (Twitter) anything beyond 1-2 hashtags hurts readability. This tool highlights the running count so you know right away when you've crossed Instagram's limit.

How to pick hashtags that work

The most reliable strategy mixes a few very popular hashtags (millions of posts, fierce competition) with niche tags specific to your topic, where it's much easier to stand out. Favor tags that genuinely describe your content: the algorithms use them to decide who should see it. Skip generic bait tags like #followme or #like4like, which are often penalized, and remember that hashtags can't contain spaces, accents, or symbols, that's exactly why this generator strips them out automatically.

Thirty hashtags are not better than eight

Instagram's limit is thirty, but filling it rarely helps: a row of generic hashtags drops the post among millions of others, where it stays visible for a few seconds. The platforms themselves have long suggested three to five relevant tags.

The logic has changed: hashtags are no longer the main discovery channel, the main one is now what a person already watches. Tags still serve to say what the content is about, which is useful information for the algorithm, but they are no longer a lottery where more tickets mean more chances.

The pyramid that works

The combination that holds up mixes three levels: one or two very large hashtags (millions of posts, heavy competition, little chance but a big audience), three or four medium ones (tens or hundreds of thousands) and two or three small and very specific ones.

The small ones are what bring real results: somebody searching «sourdough bread at home» is looking for exactly you, somebody searching «food» is looking for nothing. With a small account, huge hashtags bring nobody: your post vanishes after ten seconds.

The mistakes that cost reach

The first is using the exact same list on every post: platforms recognise it as automated behaviour and cut the reach. The second is using irrelevant tags to catch an audience: it brings people who do not engage, and the signal that produces is worse than silence.

The third is ignoring blocked or downgraded hashtags: some apparently innocent tags have been disabled for abuse, and a post containing one can vanish from search entirely. If a post does far worse than usual for no reason, it is worth checking the tags one by one.
