What it's for

Writing the right caption stumps everyone: use these prompts as a base and adapt them to your content and tone of voice.

Tip

A good caption invites action: ask a question or ask people to save the post to boost comments.

The first line does almost all the work

In a social feed only the beginning of the caption is visible: the rest sits behind a «more» that hardly anyone taps. That line is therefore a headline, not an introduction, and has to be written as one: a question, a blunt statement, a number, an admission. Anything starting with «Hi everyone» or «Today I want to talk to you about» has already spent the space that mattered.

The rest of the caption is useful, but to people who have already decided to open it: there you can breathe, tell the story, explain. The structure that works is the newspaper one: the most important thing first, and the details in decreasing order.

The call to action, and why there should be only one

A caption asking people to comment, save, share, follow and visit the link gets nothing: the reader does not choose, they close. A single call, concrete and easy, works far better: «save it for when you need it» asks minimal effort and produces a gesture platforms treat as a strong signal.

Questions work if they are answerable in three words: «which would you use?» gets comments, «tell me about your experience» almost never, because it requires writing a text. And it is better to ask something people already have an opinion about than something they have to think over.

Hashtags, which matter less than people think

They work as topic labels, not as a summons: the very general ones drop the post among millions of others and bring nobody, the specific ones reach few people but interested ones. Three to five relevant ones are worth more than thirty at random, and on some platforms an excess is actively penalised.

It is also worth writing them readably, with a capital at the start of each word: screen readers can separate the words only that way, and a long row of joined letters is illegible for anyone.

What does not belong in a caption

The clickable links, which on several platforms are not clickable at all: they appear as text and the post is also shown to fewer people, because it leads away. The destination belongs in the bio or in the dedicated feature. And essential information, such as the time of an event or a price, which if it lives only in the caption is lost when the post is reshared as an image.

One last thing hardly anyone does: rereading the caption after publishing, in the feed, as someone scrolling past sees it. It is the only way to notice that the first line has been cut mid-word, or that the only visible sentence says nothing.
