What it's for
The title, together with the thumbnail, decides whether someone clicks: use these proven patterns as a starting point for your videos.
Tip
The best titles promise a clear benefit or spark curiosity. Keep them under 60 characters so they don't get cut off.
What actually decides the click
Title and thumbnail are judged together and in less than a second, while the eye scans a grid of twenty videos. A title does not have to explain the content: it has to give a reason to stop. The reasons that work are few and always the same — a concrete promise, an open curiosity, a number, a mistake to avoid, a surprising result.
The commonest error is the descriptive title: «Weekend vlog», «Channel update», «Let's talk about photography». They describe honestly and give no reason to open. Title and thumbnail should also say different, complementary things: if they repeat the same information, half the space is wasted.
Length, and where it gets cut
On a phone, which is where most videos are watched, the title is truncated around forty to fifty characters; in desktop search you get about sixty. Everything beyond that exists for search engines but not for the eye.
Hence the operating rule: the word that matters goes first. A title starting with «In this video I'll show you how...» wastes the first thirty characters, that is exactly the space that gets read. The same thing put as «How to do X in five minutes» says everything before the cut.
An overblown title works only once
A title promising more than the video delivers wins the click and then loses it: the platform measures how long people stay, not how much they click, and a video abandoned at the twentieth second is shown to fewer people than the next one. It is the mechanism by which an over-clever title punishes itself.
The healthy form of curiosity is the promise kept quickly: the title states a benefit, and the video delivers it in the first thirty seconds instead of making people wait until the end. Whoever keeps the promise early holds more audience than whoever holds it hostage.
A title can be changed, and hardly anyone does
Unlike a published post, a title on a video platform can be edited at any time, and the videos still getting views weeks later are exactly the ones worth experimenting on. Changing the title and thumbnail of an old video that is doing well is one of the most effective ways to grow a channel, and it requires filming nothing.
The rule for doing it properly is changing one thing at a time and giving the change a few days: if title and thumbnail change together and the numbers move, you will never know which of the two worked.
