What it's for
To get an idea of how much a video might earn from ads, based on the views and the RPM (revenue per 1000 views).
Note
It's only an estimate: real earnings depend on niche, country, season and format. Typical RPM ranges from about €1 to over €10 depending on the topic.
What RPM is, and why it is not CPM
These are the two numbers behind almost every misunderstanding. CPM is what an advertiser pays for a thousand ad impressions; RPM is what reaches the creator per thousand views of the video, and it is much lower, because the platform keeps a share, because not every view carries an ad and because many viewers use an ad blocker.
The typical relationship is that RPM is worth about half or less of CPM. That is why the screenshots showing «CPM 20 euro» circulating online say nothing about what actually landed in anyone's account: they are two different quantities.
What moves earnings more than views do
The country of the viewer: the same view is worth many times more if it comes from a rich advertising market. A channel with a million views from low-value markets can earn less than one with a hundred thousand from northern Europe or the United States.
Then the niche, which is the single biggest factor: finance, business software, insurance and professional training have advertisers who pay a lot, while entertainment, gaming and music carry low rates. And the season: the last months of the year are worth far more than January, when advertising budgets reset.
The content that is worth zero, and why
A video can be declared unsuitable for advertisers and receive little or no advertising: it happens with violence, sensitive subjects, strong language in the first seconds, but also with news reporting and with topics no brand simply wants to sit beside. It is not a punishment, it is a commercial decision, and it applies to perfectly legitimate videos too.
Then there is background music: a protected track detected by the identification system can move all the video's revenue to the rights holder. A video with a hundred thousand views and ten seconds of a famous song can earn nothing, and it is the commonest surprise for beginners.
Why advertising is the small part
Almost every creator who lives off their channel does not live off ads: the real income comes from sponsorships negotiated directly, own products, courses, memberships and affiliate links. Advertising is the part that is easy to measure, and that is why it is the part people talk about.
So the useful number to keep in mind is a different one: what a loyal subscriber is worth compared with a thousand passing views. A small channel with a devoted audience in a specific niche can be worth more than a large generic one, and this estimate, which looks only at views, cannot see that.
