What is the superbollo
It's a surtax of €20 for each kW of power over 185 kW. It's added to the normal car tax and only affects very powerful cars.
Age reductions
The superbollo falls over time: -40% after 5 years, -75% after 10, -85% after 15 and drops to zero after 20 years from build.
How the maths actually works
The calculation is simple but the starting point misleads: you pay €20 for every kW above 185, not €20 on the whole power figure. A 200 kW car pays on the 15 kW of excess, so €300, not €4,000. It is the most common confusion, and it makes the surtax look far more expensive than it is.
The power that counts is the one written on the registration document at field P.2, in kilowatts. If your papers only show horsepower, the conversion is 1 HP = 0.7355 kW, but the official figure stays the one in kW: different rounding can move the result by a few euros right around the threshold.
When it stops
The reductions are counted from the vehicle's build date, not from registration or from a change of owner. They are two different dates and a whole year can sit between them: reading the wrong field on the document means paying one band too many.
After twenty years the surtax is gone, and only the ordinary road tax remains. In the meantime the reductions come in hard steps (5, 10, 15 years): the day before the vehicle's birthday you pay the full band, the day after the discounted one.
Who does not pay it
The surtax follows ownership on 31 December of the reference year, like the road tax. If you sell the car mid-year, the surtax is paid by whoever owns it at the deadline, and it is not split into twelfths.
Left out are historic vehicles over thirty years old registered with the recognised clubs and vehicles that pay no road tax at all (disabled drivers meeting the legal requirements, exempt categories). Pure electric cars have no surtax because in their first years they pay no road tax either, and afterwards they pay only the ordinary one.
